A podcast all about Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) in toddlers, children and teens, including those living with complex presentations of Autism, anxiety, ADHD, OCD and other psychiatry.

We discuss how to resolve essential nutrition gaps in children with severely restrictive feeding, along with an exploration of feeding therapies, food connection strategies, mealtime strategies and advanced topics from the fields of nutrition psychiatry and neuro-gastroenterology (nutrition and the gut-brain axis).

Your host is Michael Hann, a consultant paediatric dietitian who is the founder and clinical director of an ARFID clinic that supports children all across Australia.

Neurological Disorders & Neurodevelopment

Our focus is on kids with complex presentations of neurodevelopment and neurological disorders which make paediatric feeding disorders extra difficult in infants, toddlers and children. It includes those kids with: Autism, Global Development Delay (GDD), ADHD, severe Anxiety, Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), 22q DiGeorge Syndrome, Hurler Syndrome, Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), Cerebral Palsy (CP) and other genetic neurological disorders.

ARFID & Paediatric Feeding Disorders

We treat a range of paediatric feeding disorders that range from highly complex forms disordered feeding associated with Autism, through to Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and neurological feeding/swallowing disorders. Feeding disorders typically create hidden deficiencies and malnutrition, which have life long impacts on developmental and mental health outcomes if left untreated. These nutrition deficits affect more than 90 percent of kids who present to our clinic. Even for extremely restrictive eaters, there are usually solutions.

Enteral Nutrition
Tube Feeding

Some kids cannot get sufficient nutrition via normal oral feeding. They need nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding, or Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) feeding, or Jejunostomy (J) tube feeding. We provide long term nutrition support for infants, children and teens who are on tube feeding at home with NDIS funding support. We have extensive expertise in tube feeding from previously working in children’s hospitals in Australia, the UK and Singapore. In particular, we specialise in tube feeding with kids who have complex requirements.

NDIS Tube Feeding Dietitians.

When children leave hospital with feeding tubes, you can transition your ongoing support to us through the NDIS HENS program.

We provide long-term nutrition support to kids with feeding tubes. We work closely with paediatricians, hospital dietitians and NDIS support coordinators to help make the transition smooth and to ensure we have good monitoring and collaboration mechanisms in place.
